AC odors fall into a few distinct categories, and the smell tells you a lot about what's wrong. Burning electrical = turn it off and call now. Musty = annoying but not urgent. Here's a smell-by-smell breakdown.

Most Likely Causes

MUSTY / 'dirty sock' smell

Biological growth on the evaporator coil or in the condensate pan. Common in humid climates. Solutions: coil cleaning, condensate treatment, UV-C lamp installation. Not urgent but won't go away on its own.

BURNING ELECTRICAL smell

URGENT. Could be a failing motor, scorched wiring, or an overheating capacitor. Turn the system off at the breaker and call us. Don't keep running it.

BURNING DUST smell (only at first startup of season)

Normal — accumulated dust on the heat exchanger or coil burning off. Should clear within 30 minutes. If it persists past an hour, treat as the URGENT category above.

CHEMICAL / sweet / ether-like smell

Refrigerant leak. R-410A has a slight sweet smell when leaking in larger quantities. Not acutely dangerous in small amounts but the system needs the leak found and sealed.

ROTTEN EGG / sulfur smell

Could be a dead animal in the ductwork or air handler closet (rodents will get in). Or — if you have a gas furnace and only smell it during heating cycles — possible gas leak. Treat the gas-leak possibility as urgent.

SEWAGE smell from vents

Either a backed-up condensate line that's siphoning sewer gas, or a dry P-trap in a nearby plumbing fixture. Plumbing issue, not HVAC, but we can confirm.

EXHAUST / oil / fuel smell

Most common in homes with attached garages — your AC return is pulling air from the garage. Needs duct sealing or a return relocation.

Try These Steps Before You Call

  • Replace the air filter.
  • Pour 1 cup of vinegar down the condensate drain access.
  • If the smell is musty, run the fan for 30 minutes after each cooling cycle to dry the coil.
  • If the smell is BURNING ELECTRICAL — turn off the AC at the breaker and call us.
